Removal of River Accessories

Submitted by tbender on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 12:02

River accessories such as kayak launches, floating bridges and docks must be removed each fall. Kayak launches are generally removed starting mid-October and floating bridges and docks are removed once temperatures are consistently low enough to allow for ice to form on the river. If snowfall is predicted, accessories might have to be removed earlier than usual as these conditions can make it more difficult and dangerous for crews and equipment.

Closing of Park Amenities

Submitted by tbender on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 11:58

All of our parks are public spaces and open to the community year around, but some amenities must be closed in the fall as the season gets colder. Park amenities will typically close once snowfall begins. Water is shut off and bathroom are closed once freezing temperatures are forecasted.

Make sure to keep an eye on Fargo Park District social media and the Latest News page for facility and amenity announcements.

Mowing

The Fargo Park District employs mowing crews dedicate to golf courses, sports fields and park areas. Park areas consist of over 1,200 acres of mowed property and are maintained by two different types of crews made up of more than 25 seasonal staff. Large and open areas of parks are mowed by large area mowers and trim crews then mow and trim the smaller areas that are not accessible to the large mowers.

The goal is for most parks to be mowed weekly at a cutting height of 2.5". Weather, equipment and staffing can cause unexpected delays at times.

Garbage

We strive to keep our parks and facilities as clean as possible. Crews start to pick up garbage as soon as it begins to thaw from snowbanks. However, if you notice any areas that are particularly soiled, please let us know by submitting a service request form or by texting "GARBAGE" to 701-997-7275.

Installation of River Accessories

Crews install floating bridges, kayak launches and docks as soon as ice and river levels allow. Docks are typically installed first because they are the easiest to move in and out if river conditions change suddenly. Floating bridges and kayak launches are generally installed in May, weather dependent.

Opening of Park Amenities

Submitted by tbender on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 11:42

All of our parks are public spaces and open to the community year around, but some amenities are closed for the season in the fall and reopened in the spring. Water will be turned on and permanent bathroom facilities opened each spring once staff determines most of the freezing potential has passed.

Portable toilets are placed near existing bathroom locations as a temporary measure until water is turned back on.

Spraying and Fertilizing

Submitted by tbender on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 11:40

In order to keep parks and green spaces beautiful and healthy, the Park District begins spraying and fertilizing in the spring and continue into the fall. Employees are licensed as commercial applicators through the State of North Dakota and all chemicals used are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Fargo Park District does not apply mosquito control chemicals. The chemicals that are applied are most commonly herbicides for broadleaf weed control, fungicides and fertilizer.

Seasonal Staffing

Submitted by tbender on Mon, 12/05/2022 - 11:38

We would not be able to maintain our parks, trail and facilities without the help of season staff. In general, there are two groups of seasonal staff: those whose schedules allow them to work from April to October and those who are only available the end of May until August (generally students and teachers).

Our crews are always looking for additional help, especially in the spring and fall. If you are looking for full-time, part-time or seasonal employment please visit our Employment Opportunities page.
