Project Overview: The Fargo Park District is restoring select park spaces with native prairie plants, grasses and wildflowers to support pollinators, improve wildlife habitat and strengthen the long-term health of our parks. These restoration areas may look different while native plants establish and may appear uneven, sparse or less manicured than traditional turf grass during the early stages. This is a normal part of the process, as native prairie plants often spend their early energy building deep root systems before showing significant growth above ground. Over time, these spaces become fuller, more colorful and more beneficial to bees, butterflies, birds, wildlife and the community. This work is part of a larger commitment to caring for public land in a way that supports biodiversity, builds healthier landscapes and creates more resilient park spaces for future generations.
NEW Prairie Restoration Sites – Select sites will be converted from existing conditions to native prairie using locally sourced ecotype seed mixes composed of native grasses, wildflowers and pollinator-friendly plants. Following installation, sites will be actively managed for a minimum of three years to support successful establishment, weed control and long-term prairie health. Click here to view the map.
Sites: Fargo Parks Sports Center Pond (2.75 acres), Legacy Park (0.5 acres), El Zagal Golf Course (0.75 acres), Rose Creek Golf Course (1.5 acres), Rabanus Expansion (1 acre), Timberline Trail (6 acres), Riverwood Park (4 acres)
Prairie Restoration Management Sites – Existing prairie restoration areas will be managed to improve plant diversity, ecological health and weed control. Ongoing management practices may include mowing, overseeding, native plant installation and selective regeneration efforts to encourage the continued establishment and growth of desirable species. A seasonal site management plan will be developed following the first site visit and provided to the Fargo Park District Natural Resource Supervisor. Click here to view the map.
