As the weather starts to warm up again, don’t forget about all activities to try outdoors throughout Fargo. The Fargo Park District offers many fun, free activities for all ages looking to head outdoors, try something new or just enjoy the Fargo winters and snow. From trails to hills to ice, there is surely something for everyone. Take a look at our list below.

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

If you’re looking for some outdoor exercise or just want to enjoy the beauty of Fargo winters, try cross country skiing or snowshoeing! The Fargo Park District offers nine trails winding through golf courses, nature parks and along the river. Locations include Edgewood Golf Course, Prairiewood Golf Course, Dike East Park, Island Park, Iwen Park, Forest River, Heritage Hills and Orchard Glen.

Cross country ski trails vary in distance and most locations have at least two trails to choose from. The trails are groomed as needed depending on weather and trail conditions. For more information on cross country skiing, trail distances and to view trail maps, visit the Cross Country Ski Trails page

Want to try cross country skiing or snowshoeing but don’t have the equipment? Head to the Edgewood Chalet to rent some on Monday-Friday from 4:00-8:00 pm and Saturday-Sunday from 12:00-8:00 pm. This is the only Fargo Parks location offering cross country ski and snowshoe rentals.

Sledding

Sledding is a great winter activity to get those kiddos out of the house, wear them down (walking up the hill) and cheer them up (sledding back down). The Fargo Park District offers two sledding hills; the first hill is located way up north at the Edgewood Golf Course and the second hill is more mid-town Fargo at the Mickelson Park & Softball Fields.

Both locations offer sleds to rent at no cost. Check out a sled using either a picture ID or $20 deposit that is returned when the sled is returned. Sledders can also bring their own sled but metal saucers, toboggans, sleds with metal runners and cardboard pieces are not allowed. For more information on sledding visit the Sledding Hill page

Outdoor Rinks

The Fargo Park District offers 15 different outdoor rink locations across Fargo, making it a great winter activity for those just learning to skate, playing a pickup hockey game with friends or skating around for fun. Each of these 15 locations have boards and hockey nets on the rinks, while 6 locations also have a pleasure rink, which is just ice and no boards or nets.

All outdoor rinks are open. The locations in north Fargo include Horace Mann, Roosevelt, Longfellow, McKinley and Washington. The locations in south Fargo include Clara Barton, Lemke, Jefferson, Kennedy, Westgate and Lewis & Clark.

Pleasure rinks are located at Longfellow, Lewis & Clark, McKinley, Roosevelt, Washington and Westgate. For more information and further updates, visit the Outdoor Rinks & Warming Houses page

Warming Houses

Warming house hours at the outdoor rinks and sledding hills are Monday-Friday from 4:00-8:00 pm and Saturday-Sunday from 12:00-8:00 pm. Hours are subject to change according to weather conditions.

Warming houses are closed earlier than scheduled in the evenings if the temperatures reach –10 degrees or colder or the wind chills at –30 degrees or colder. For more information on warming houses and the COVID guidelines, visit the Outdoor Rinks & Warming Houses page
