The Fargo Park District, in partnership with Audubon Great Plains, NDSU, and United Prairie Foundation, invites the community to participate in an engaging evening of citizen science and exploration at a Monarch Butterfly Tagging event on Wednesday, August 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Urban Plains Park.
Attendees of all ages will have the opportunity to engage in monarch butterfly tagging, a process that supports the study of the migratory patterns of monarch butterflies. Event staff will be onsite to guide participants in the delicate tagging process, which involves capturing butterflies and applying small, lightweight tags to their wings. This data contributes to Monarch Watch, a research program based at the University of Kansas focused on monarch butterflies and their migration.
A limited supply of butterfly nets will be available for participants to use. In addition to butterfly tagging, attendees can color prairie themed scenes and create chalk art with sidewalk chalk.
Admission is free and no pre-registration is required. The event is open to all ages and Urban Plains Park is ADA accessible.
Urban Plains Park is part of the Urban Pollinators Plots (UPP) Project, a joint effort by the Fargo Park District, Audubon Great Plains, NDSU, United Prairie Foundation, and the North Dakota Outdoor Heritage Fund to establish and restore native urban landscapes that support pollinators n the Fargo metro area.
Urban Plains Park is located at 3020 51st Street S., Fargo, N.D. 58104. For more information visit Fargo Parks.com or call 701-499-6060.
