Time to flex your recycling muscles! Gather your supplies and test your hand at creating an amazing cardboard sled. Enjoy sled races and a contest for the most creative sled. Registration begins at 11:00 am in the warming house with races starting at 11:30 am. 

Pre-registration is not required for this free event.

Frostival is all about celebrating the “cool” of winter with outdoor events and family-friendly activities across our North of Normal metro area of Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead. Grab your friends, bring your spirit of adventure (and maybe some mittens) and join us in making cold, cool. Events throughout the 6-week event can be found at frostival.com.

Event Rules

  • Speed races are held in the following classes with awards presented to the first three participants that cross the finish line:
    • Class 1: Age 10 and under
    • Class 2: Ages 11-17
    • Class 3: Ages 18 and older
  • Participants may also choose to enter their sled in the contest for Best Design, which is judged by an assembled panel prior to any speed races. Entries should be on-site and registered by 11:15 am.
  • The Class 1 race begins at 11:30 am with each subsequent race taking place at the completion of the prior class. All racers are encouraged to be present for all races to ensure you do not miss your slot.
  • Awards are presented at the completion of all races.
  • Registration for the Cardboard Sled Race is held on-site the day of the event beginning at 11:00 am.
  • Teams should create their sled prior to the event and bring it with them. There are not available materials on-site.
  • Sleds must be free of sharp edges, pointy objects or any other object deemed to be dangerous.
  • Only corrugated cardboard, tape and glue may be used to construct your sled. The following materials are not allowed:
    • Corrugated plastics or other corrugated materials; non-corrugated cardboard (such as carpet tubes); cardboard that is bonded to other materials; epoxy reinforced cardboard; or any other cardboard that raises concern.
    • Tar-based substances; epoxy glue; fiberglass resin; two-part varnishes or any other two-part substances; or glues that harden into solids that may be deemed dangerous or may potentially leave hazardous debris on the hill.
    • Screws or any sort of material; mechanical fasteners; nails; staples; or any other means of holding your sled together that may be deemed dangerous or may potentially leave hazardous debris on the hill.
    • If there are any doubts, don’t use it.
  • Only seems and joints may be taped, not the whole sled. Your sled may not be wrapped in plastic, tape, shrink wrap, or anything other materials.
  • You must be able to stop your sled. You may be asked to explain or demonstrate this at the time of your inspection.
  • Team costumes are encouraged! Remember to dress for the weather.
  • Teams should report to the warming house between 11:00-11:20 am for registration. Entries in the Best Design category should be registered by 11:15 am.
  • The Best Design winners are awarded by a panel of judges and their decision is final.
  • Each class race is a shotgun start where all racers beginning at the same time. The first three racers to cross the finish line as determined by the referee are declared the winners.
  • You must be in or on your sled when you cross the finish line.
  • Each class race immediately follows the preceding class heat.
  • Awards are presented at the completion of the final class race.
